about

“I am enamoured by moments on the verge. Whether it’s the drawn out longing of a considered crawl, or acting on fluttering impulse and diving into an electric rush, I find that an interesting tension is exposed between my sense of being and sense of self in these exact moments.

Studying communications and exploring contemporary movement has fuelled my curiosity of analysing and interpreting how beings emote, interact and live. Environments lingered in, as well as the people with I’ve lingered amongst, inform how I approach each piece I create, and absorb them with connection.

I find an unassuming resonance in the ‘cheap thrills’ of the internet and rise of social media that has grown rapidly during my adolescence, parallel to the perfect math that goes into crafting a truly great pop song. Easy to digest and enjoy on the surface, but only because of the conscious, careful work carried out during the creation process. My practise has interest in the space between binaries, aware of the abilities of precious metals: delicate and soft despite their hardness, strength, and durability.”

HEARTCRAWL is a project by Flynn Gilder-Smith,
an emerging jeweller based in Naarm who has recently completed an Advanced Diploma of Jewellery and Object Design at Melbourne Polytechnic. Additionally, Flynn assists and teaches classes at Blonde. in Fitzroy.

Inspired by the space between binaries, Flynn creates work primarily using precious metals, exploring their ability to appear delicate and soft despite their strength and durability.

Drawing on personal memories, Flynn manipulates motifs from pop iconography and modern culture wars to create understanding of their own fantasies and nightmares.
